I thought I would show off the slice of wood I've got planned for my personal OO-45. I'm planning either a redwood top or an Adirondack top.

Yes, those are some void spots right in the waist area. Since this is for me, I'll just fill with brz dust and ca or epoxy. I'm not too concerned.

Hesh, actually that came from a small board I had laying around. It started out 16" wide, 2" thick, and 4' long.
That's the small board.


Binding? Probably ivoroid, in keeping with Style-45 tradition. I've never done anything very traditional "Martin" looking, this is a first for me. Should be a fun project. If it comes out 1/2 as nice as Vivian Ecker's I'll be a happy guy.

I also have a Size-5 Terz style guitar planned, using some really cool Black Acacia I had laying around...



This one will even have a Black Acacia neck, with a killer redwood top. This board is 2" thick also....

Don! Warning! Those "voids" are actually spores of the very rare luthiorus Maximus bacteria. I just started working for a biological test lab (honest! ). If you send them to me for proper inspection and decontamination, I promise send them back just as soon as it is safe!

John, I think you're right about the addy top. I've got a nice wide-grained piece here from a mandolin builder friend, perfect for that old vintage look.

Terry, no it's not ziricote...but I did come across an incredible set of Z-wood (aka Mexican Crackwood) that we talked about you buying from me back at ASIA.... Dang! It is so glassy sounding. I just ordered some more resaw blades and will be slicing up the rest of it this weekend. Hopefully. Gonna sell off a lot of my wood. Don't need 100+ sets of wood...

Don...nice to see you back in the game! I'll bet you "new attitude" will rejuvunate your brain and initiate some even more creative events than you ever anticipated. Just remember...it's for the love of the craft...no pressure of a time committment...just meeting your own standards.

Well, not back in the game yet...

The truth is, I've been going through all my wood to decide what to keep and what to sell, and I came across some stuff that I was debating about. Then I found the brz shown above, and debated selling it, but then realized how perfect it would be for a OO.

I seem to be gravitating toward smaller guitars lately. I was quite taken by the Sting Size 5 prototype that Martin had at their table at the ASIA Symposium, and also by Steve Spodaryk's Stauffer-inspired guitars. Dang, they're sweet!

Also, one of the nicest little guitars I've ever played was Vivian Ecker's OO that she built under TJ Thompson. I seem to be really liking the smaller guitars, so I thought I might as well build one or two for myself. The Black Acacia is too small to use for anything else except parlors or ukes, and I couldn't envision anything better for that set of BRW than a OO like Viv's.

I've not felt like building anything at all in many months, but somehow this wood and those instruments have my interest slightly piqued. We'll see. Time will tell.
